V.-Nightmares / Moss & Mould

As a four-fold imagery, V.-Nightmares spreads its creation over a whole year in an ongoing study of the cycles of seasons and of life. A life of moving scenes and multiple aesthetic confrontations, where the seasons explore the borders between dance and performance, each in their own way and as counteract to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Autumn sees in Moss&Mould a baroque piece with morbid outlines. Those images, midway between hunting and harvesting, coats the bodies with a chiaroscuro kiss and organic residues.

...Then comes the autumn of Moss & Mould, with its words, hurts, and stratified deliquescence; still lifes, mists, cracklings, reddenings, and smells that appear almost to spring out of a magnificent pictorial universe.  Life advances, the return to the soil has begun...

La Libre Belgique, Marie Baudet, 9/11/07

...In Part 3, Smits and his four dancers/performers reflect on rich autumnal images of hunting and harvest, death, decay, the relationship between flesh and bone...

The Scotsman, J. McMillan, 24/02/08

...Moss & Mould (autumn) is the ante-room before extinction, the rich, almost-baroque welter of hunting/harvesting symbolism a reminder that one man's sport is another species' demise...
