Soirée Dansante

Synopsis

A piece without a ‘story line’ and supposed to be only ‘dance, dance, dance’, Soirée dansante is not for all that devoid of inspiration.  However, it is the spectator’s job to detect the references, be they to Egyptian hieroglyphs and statuary, Miró’s work, children’s toys, even the Hindu bhakti movement, in this aesthetically and choreographically eclectic piece.  Structured in four main ‘periods’,  to wit,  a highly oppressive quartet called ‘Anubis’, a very gentle pas-de-deux called ‘Lapin’ (rabbit), the disjointed trio of ‘Surprise’ (reworked and multiplied), and a more mystical sequence for seven dancers, ‘Raga’, Soirée dansante multiplies the effects of surprise, while the lack of sets increases the emphasis on the costumes and the choreography itself.

…"The dance of Thierry Smits is uncommonly virtuoso and surprising, the choreography exceptionally pure and complex (...) Soirée Dansante is a masterly, inventive and self-relating choreography for which you need more than one pair of eyes and ears. It would appear to be an ode to the volatility of dance, a proof that abstract work does not have to be dry and powerless."

De Morgen, Domenike Van Besien, 6/12/95

The modern dance has put certain narrow‑mindedness on itself that Thierry Smits succeeds to break through in a lovely way, simply by using everything that appears to him. Whether that be ballet-poses, disco-freaking, folklore or pseudo-ethnic hands. But the spark in Thierry Smits is not particularly that what he uses, but rather the suppleness, the composed lines in which he said: melodies of movement and harmonies of a Mozartian sweetness, inventive and (seemingly) simple.

Rotterdams Dagblad, Martin Bijkerk, 22/01/96

The whole performance radiates such a boyish roguishness. A clearness you can also hear in the profound music of Noise-Maker's Fifes, with ritual sounds and common noises. A magnificent emphatic piece.

Het Belang van Limburg, Tuur Devens, 12/12/1995

One of the nicest results of this oeuvre is in the interpenetration of the different sequences, 'Anubis', 'Lapin' 'Surprise' and 'Raga' (titles which refer to the inspirational sources without implying any attempt to dramaturgical interpretation). So many moments of happiness in a choreography in which you can sense the incredible freedom of inspiration an inventiveness at any instance.

Le Soir, Jean‑Marie Wynants,8/12/95
