To the Ones I Love

Synopsis

To the Ones I Love proposes pure dance and tells about the body in movement, the pleasure of dancing and the desire of sharing this energy with the spectator.

In To the Ones I Love, Thierry Smits explores the formal possibilities of the choreographic composition, like he did in the past with Soirée dansante (1995) or more recently in D'ORIENT (2005). This time, the choreographer works with nine dancers of African descent, or more precisely, nine dancers whose complexions hark back to Africa, and mixes their individual specificities with his choreographic writing. Their movements are almost calligraphy, series of shapes traced on the white page of the stage. They dance in a white decor and are literally transported by Johan Sebastian Bach's music, by its overflowing generosity and immense virtuosity.

With elements of ballet, hip hop, African dance and capoeira, To the Ones I Love pays homage to movement at its purest, it celebrates the male physique's beauty, power, and capacity for expression.

The dancers' physical and technical aptitude meant that one couldn't help but sit back and enjoy the spectacle. They maintained admirable grace until the end, only to receive yet another rowdy ovation.
