Compagnie Thor

In 1990, the choreographer Thierry Smits creates his own company in Brussels, Compagnie Thor. Through this company he freely develops his work which, often in an eclectic manner, explores the ambiguous links between the mystical and the erotic, the spiritual and the corporeal and questions metaphysical problems of the human mind in its relation to the body.

Since 1990 the company has produced more than thirty dance performances, among others, Eros délétère (1991), Cyberchrist (1995), Soirée dansante (1995), Corps(e) (1998), Red Rubber Balls (1999), L'Âme au diable (1994/2002), Dionysos' Last Day / Stigma (2003), Reliefs d'un banquet (2004), D’ORIENT (2005) and V.-Nightmares (2007).

The company brings together artists of a high level from all over the world. Besides the choreographic and set richness of its performances, it is also thanks to their talent that the company has established its reputation and has been able to multiply its tours in Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Croatia, the United States, the Middle East and North Africa.

Within fifteen years the company has thus become one of the major dance references of Belgium. Since its creation it has been supported by several Belgian institutions. Its growing influence has also been acknowledged by its primary funding source, The Ministry of the French speaking community of Belgium, which has increased its financial support over the years.

Compagnie Thor's twentieth anniversary
In 2010, Compagnie Thor celebrated its twentieth anniversary. It was an opportunity to look back and present its followers with an overview of the choreographer's work. Thierry Smits. The body-in-tensions is written by Antoine Pickels, the choreographer's travelling companion from the start of his career. This retrospective in book form, which retraces the choreographer's steps in words and pictures, appeared in January 2010 at Editions Alternatives théâtrales.
