In “Spongebabe in L.A. (4 Love & Anxiety)”, Mercedes Dassy evokes the archetype of the pop icon as a luminous yet tragic double, the embodiment of both a dream and a sense of vertigo. A powerful and unsettling solo piece, somewhere between a declaration of artistic independence and the cry of a body in transformation. At the crossroads of dance, concert and autofiction, “Spongebabe in L.A.” crosses the thresholds of burnout and sketches out possible rebirths. In it, the artist explores transformation: not as a performative imperative, but as a slow, imperfect, sometimes painful, and always fragile process.
Mercedes Dassy, a performer and choreographer, has been dancing since childhood. Growing up in Brussels, she was deeply influenced by the vibrant choreographic scene in Belgium. While still a teenager, she was selected to take part in a show alongside other young dancers, and this experience introduced her both to the rigours of creative work and the joys of touring. She now knew that she wanted to make this her career.
Mercedes Dassy is now embarking on a new phase of research. Fascinated by the iconic figure of the singer, she is interested in the voice and in writing, which she wishes to explore through her own texts. For this new chapter, she will, amongst other things, be an associate artist with Charleroi danse from the 2023–24 season onwards.
