“Afro” – referring to the African continent – and “renaissance”, proclaiming the desire for a cultural rebirth. A return to the roots, but above all, a projection into the future, or perhaps a journey into the past? In any case, it follows a labyrinthine path from the origins of every human being… to the end, passing through unique and incidental twists and turns along the way.
Romuald Dikoume (CM)
Africa needs to reinvent itself now more than ever. It is time to sound the alarm and rethink African “cultures” to ensure their integration into the dynamism of contemporary life.
To speak of ‘renaissance’ is to speak of moral and intellectual rearmament, as well as psychic and psychological renewal. Along the way, we revisit the relationship between our culture and sensuality, sexuality, and its connection to the human body. The artist’s microscopic gaze remains a revealer of truth, with the ultimate goal being purification—elevating the body to a divine state. The encounter with the next story is a marketplace, where Africa can serve as the compass.
Born in 1986 in Cameroon, Romuald Dikoume (he, him) is a visual artist who lives and works in Douala. Marked by a destabilizing family history, he finds salvation in art. His pictorial style, both figurative and naïve, centers around specific characters placed in a dense and colorful environment, reminiscent of Art Brut. His performances bear the marks of existential suffering and solitude, questioning the fragmentation of the self, parent-child relationships, and personality duality. In recent years, his paintings, photographs, performances, and installations have been exhibited in various locations, both in Cameroon and in countries such as Congo, Gabon, Chad, Morocco, and France.
