By choreographing from a familiar arrangement to unfamiliar positions, this performance is an excuse to reimagine social and sensory interactions.
The tables set the scene. The tables themselves are set by our hands.
Selim Clérin
A single table can evoke many things; several tables, arranged in certain ways, remind us of places, even organize us. We have learned to respect the arrangement of tables as they are when we arrive. And to leave by putting our chairs away, leaving only the invisible traces of our presence behind.
We have learned to be quiet and raise our hands, to speak softly, or to shout from our seats. Have we ever taken the time together, by choice, to twist the rows, to satisfy our thirst for sleep, to stretch, to listen out of interest or curiosity, to tell the person sitting next to us that we would like more space or a footrest?
A Brussels-based artist, Selim Clérin (he/they) discovered performance art at the ERG during Lucille Calmel’s course and is currently studying anthropology. Their performative work revolves around care and the commons and seeks to highlight pre-existing or potential relationships through the somatic. Their proposals emerge from a strong urge to move and a desire to share the joy of performing. They seek to break down the dichotomy between moving body/immobilized body, center of attention/disciplined periphery.
