What
Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture of the French Community, this work was created for “Emotions,” the tour promoting contemporary dance in Wallonia. Surprise is even further detached from any dramaturgical context by being inspired solely by the visual universe of the Catalan painter Joan Miró.
Clad entirely in latex costumes in primary colours, three dancers move around the stage creating various compositions, a kind of living, moving installation. Thierry Smits exploits Miro’s pictorial work in order to interpret it through a quirky choreography, marked by his personal imprint between irony, facetiousness, affliction and distress. He blithely transgresses boundaries between elitist and mass culture, classical and popular music, movements from the classical repertoire and out-of-kilter postures in order to combine them into disturbing tableaux.
Extensive excerpts from this work will feature in Soirée dansante.
