Dressed in her finest outfit, hair done and well made-up, the artist waits for her Prince Charming. On a bench, in a public garden, a first encounter to find the right one…
Hilal Aydoğdu (BE)
Without any forethought, it is the day on which Ramadan comes to an end that Hilal Aydoğdu prepares to fast the entire day. She seeks to be nourished, not with food or drink, but with presents, which visitors come to bring her throughout the day.
“We’re constantly looking for our other half somewhere out there the world. Talk about the fear of ending up one’s days living with cats is recurrent. I often hear how reassuring it is to have a life-long partner, and so I get used to the notion that it would be easier for me to share myself in an attempt to feel better, to reassure myself. I can recall all those marriages, all those young faces excited to meet the unknown body for the first time. That deep desire for the other hidden between heartbeats. And what if they were just pretending? And what if I had been seen with all these different men, my eyes devouring theirs? What if it had been noticed that I, too, am filled with desire?”
Just graduated from a master’s degree course in drawing at the Beaux-Arts de Liège, Hilal Aydoğdu has been performing for several years, a practice she deepened at La Cambre. Her work has already been presented at the festival Trouble #11 (“Kefen”) and during (Pas si) Fragile! 2022 (“Misafirperver”), she probes her position as a woman in a man’s world.
