Destroying something in order to rebuild something else. As in certain initiation rituals, where a person arrives with his or her own experiences, only to undergo a rite that changes his or her appearance, sometimes even his or her social status or way of seeing the world.
Melvine Deveugèle (BE)
The performance takes up this process of transformation, the passage from one state to another in several creative stages, culminating in a metamorphosis. Before the start of the performance, the spectator is invited to join a space that is deliberately waiting, with reference to a ceremonial. The initial action is one of preparation and introspection, in order to immerse oneself in an emerging atmosphere and energy.
This concentration is the driving force behind the performance: it determines all movements, displacements, actions and gestures of destruction and reconstruction. The performance ends when the last tool is used.
Melvine Deveugèle (she, her) developed her multidisciplinary artistic approach in the painting workshop at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Tournai. Here, observation, concentration and gesture become creative processes, leading her to exploit physical phenomena such as tension, balance, exhaustion and repetition. She tries to reveal to the eye what is imperceptible, what is ephemeral, what happens in the present moment. Like imprints, flows and waves, constantly at play between the body doing and the world feeling.
