In “Hyper-visible Bodies”, Fadwa Bouziane navigates with difficulty, blindfolded, around the block, passing her hand on the walls, and ardently makes it back into the art space. She enters the studio space for her final act, inviting the viewer to follow each longing step until the end of her walk into the institution.
Fadwa Bouziane (IE)
Living under a system of oppression on an everyday basis exacerbates the body. The trauma inflicted by our surroundings and constant violence against Brown, Black, and Indigenous bodies impacts our mental state. What we see on social media, in school, in political laws, and on the street—every act towards racialized bodies takes a toll on us. We experience and endure abuse in various spheres, dehumanizing, infantilizing, and humiliating us. There is no escape for us but to walk blindfolded through it.
Fadwa Bouziane (she, her) was born in a small town called Cowansville in Québec. Her mother Farida Bouziane is an Amazigh Indigenous Moroccan and her father Ulrick St-Louis is Haitian. She is a presenting Black woman, Bi, raised in a Muslim household where the bible and the Quran were sitting at the same night table.
