In the performance series Labeur(s), Marie Bertrand tackles the theme of recognition in the art world.
Marie Bertrand (BE)
In Labeur II, the performer fills an A4 sheet of white paper as best she can, coloring it with colored pencils with broken leads. She re-sharpens them again and again until they are completely worn out and the sheet is completely filled.
This absurd and laborious work symbolizes the constant effort and resources required to achieve a result that at best will speak to some, at worst will fall into total indifference. Like the pencil, the artist is potentially destined to reach the end of his or her energy, inspiration and color, but to keep on working. Exhaustion plays an important role in what is expressed through this work: exhaustion of the material as well as of the body and mind.
Marie Bertrand (she, her), a Belgian artist with a degree in painting from ESA le 75 and another one of the IDM option at ARTS², is developing a multi-disciplinary practice ranging from performance and video to installation, sound, sculpture, painting, drawing and more. Her questioning of everyday life ranges from the world of work to her condition as a woman, as well as childhood, death, the body, the absurd and humor.
