We rely heavily on sight to perceive our bodies. Appearance has a special value in society, so it plays an important role in building relationships with others, to the point where people who are perceived as attractive often receive more attention and different treatment. This is so ingrained in society that it affects our ability to empathize with others and to recognize them as sentient beings.
Lučka Centa (SI)
It is only when we deprive people of the ability to see that they begin to perceive their environment through other senses. What happens when we can no longer see the body? What kind of relationship does the spectator establish with the human being when he or she can only hear?
In the performance To Sense A Body, the artist performs in front of an audience with their eyes covered. Gradually, through exploration, she begins to develop sounds with her body, and through movement brings it to the point where it can no longer physically move.
Lučka Centa (she, her) is a Slovenian intermedia artist. She graduated in 2021 from the Fine Arts Department at the UCM. She is currently enrolled in the second year of the Master in Sculpture at the ALUO UL. She develops her artistic practice around the idea that the body is both a natural and a social object, which allows it to act as a bridge between the two spheres. Through the use of performance, installation, photography and video, she focuses on understanding the vulnerability and temporality of life and the individual’s impact and dependence of the environment.
