At the top of the stairs, standing on the threshold of an inaccessible door, a ghostly child is caught between the past and the future.
The child sings his doubts and questions. She cannot bring himself to cross that threshold. Afraid of what lies ahead, he prefers to look back. To pass through that door is to fall into the void. In a bid to explore the other side without risk, he invents a way to defend himself.
Carole Louis (BE)
Imbued with a bittersweet cruelty, Carole Louis’ tales expose how human beings struggle with their aspirations for happiness. At first sight naïve, her tragicomic universe examines preconceptions and categories. With an ingenuous gaze, she places herself at the point where misunderstandings arise in an attempt to reveal what turns absurd.
Combining different media, she generates a global context that she activates through performance (costumes, props, objects, sculptures, sound and video). Her performance characters’ gestures and words are governed by arbitrary laws they strive to obey. Caged in by the need to adapt to norms and to fit in at all costs, they cultivate clichés that often verge on the grotesque.
